Near and dear to my heart, this mosaic was truly a journey. I had my mother's old toy teaset from the 1920s, complete with multiple sets of "silverware." I was thrilled to pull it out from it's dusty old box and wrappings and first thought I would save it for grandchildren. However, I began to worry about the toxicity of paints they used to use and the fragility of it. By the time my first grandbaby came along and he was a he, I'd decided that displaying it was the best way to go. The design was faded in places and there were a few chips but I had plenty to work with. Then it was just waiting for my mosaic-teacher-extraordinaire to get out her wet saw, so she could cut the cups it half for me. The rest was easy enough to do with the nippers. I ended up with enough material to make three works, the two smaller ones for family members. (I still need to get a finished picture of those.) I shaped the remaining broken pieces into "flower" embellishments.
