What a Hoot

I loved creating all the papers for "What a Hoot." Some are maps, some old texts, some rice paper, but all painted and textured using paint on my gel plate or some of the darks with a chemical dissolve technique.  The background is a mix of papers and paint and lace leaves.  She was definitely hooting at me while I layered her feathers!

Flower Power

Flower Power was great fun!  Just like my mosaic faces, she was originally created on AI to launch me into a wild paper painting.  Somehow this old cool-color girl has turned warm with reds, yellows and oranges.  I'm not really sure when that happened, but I'm veering toward those colors more and more and in this peice, it really came together.  I like the swing of her head, her movement and her freedom.  I guess I really am a child of the 60s!

Waimakariri

Waimakariri is a river on the south island of New Zealand.  Hubs and I took a train right alongside it. This is my interpretation of the views.  There were so many layers of landscape with the sudden pop of flowers in the foreground.

Cornish Sea

While I love faces, sometimes I have to take a break and "go wide," like for this landscape inspired by our trip to the Cornwall coast. Oh, boy, I just loved it there!  I tried something new here and had my husband cut me wood to encase a peice of glass.  So the sea and sky are on glass and I can light it up from the back.  I might keep experimenting with that.

The Vision

The Vision is the 2nd in my faces series. I just love building the face in glass.  Like fabrics, the variety in glass colors and textures are endless--and gorgeous!  Embedding the bling is fun but can be challenging as some can be grouted and others cannot.  Once I determine what goes on, I might have to wait to adhere it.

The third in the series is coming along....

Tea Cup Mosaics

Teatime Visitor

China Tea Cup Mosaics are so much fun.  And they are so relaxing to do.  I just love to sit and glue.  Once all the decisions are made, it's just like sitting down with a beloved jigsaw.  It's all about cutting--or finding--the right shape for the perfect spot.

Be Brave

Oops, Hubs forgot the greenery before taking a pic of this one!

Spice and Life

I made "Strong Women" a couple years back, but had so many techniques I wanted to learn in mosaics that it took me a while to get back to it.  And then I went haywire and worked on many teacup projects at once! I think it's kind of easier that way...

The Veil

The Veil marks the beginning of my return to portraiture!  Created first in AI, I use the image as a launch point for wild abstraction in glass and bling!  It's weird how different she looks with and without the tile-swirled background.  The Veil is the first in a series of fabulous faces. Stay tuned for more!

Fire and Florals

I lump these three paper paintings for a number of reasons.  The first two below are paintings that I did before I knew there was such a thing as Mixed Media Collage.  I was entranced by the neat textures and vibrant colors of patterned paper and experimented with adding them to my paintings.  I liked the outcomes but felt that they did not get as warm a reception as my oils, so I put it aside and concentrated on painting for a while. Little did I know that other artists were doing the same experimenting, even perfecting the craft!  The third, "Bouquet," was done more recently under guidance of a great collage artist, Elizabeth Saint Hilaire, from whom I learned so many more techniques!

An Age of Ladies

Remember this project from a few years back, done with paste-papers I had made?  While it was nice enough, I had never really considered it complete.  I often hung things on my studio wall to get them out in the open, waiting for new inspiration.  This one took a few years, but it finally turned into something more exciting.  It's a celebration of history, women and crafting a beautiful life.

Peaclock

The Peaclock was inspired by a mosaic I saw on our trip to Jordan.  Mosaics there are fantastic and there are whole shops dedicated to this artform.  I was in heaven!
